Our Top 12 Tips for Successful Goal-Setting

  1. Clarify what you want to achieve and record it
    •    Make sure it’s something you have control over
    •    Remember to make it a SMART goal:
    Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed (set a “by when”)
  2. How will you know when it’s been achieved?
    •    List out the evidence you need, and
    •    Involve all the senses when imagining it
  3. Write out and think of your goal in positive terms, and in the present tense
  4. Ensure your goal is congruent with your values
  5. List out the first 3 steps you need to take to make it happen (with dates)
  6. Keep it in existence in the physical world: write it or display where you’ll see it regularly
  7. Think about what you’ve tried before and identify what didn’t work.  Set yourself up to win this time
  8. Identify and deal with any self-sabotage mechanisms you find, such as limiting beliefs
  9. Get yourself a support structure: join (or form) a club, association or educational programme; get yourself a coach or accountability buddy
  10. Identify and acquire any help or resources you need to achieve your goal (both internal and external)
  11. Act and review regularly (for example, taking action daily with weekly reviews works well for many people)
  12. Celebrate all your milestones along the way to give yourself the experience of success.
